The Eagles didn’t waste any time celebrating their healthy win over the Chiefs, as wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith dumped the jug of lime Gatorade over head coach Nick Sirianni, before the final whistle was even blown. Jalen Hurts got his revenge from the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs two years ago and was awarded the Super Bowl MVP, as well as Saquon Barkley proving to be the final piece of the puzzle for the Eagles. Chiefs fans were left disappointed after Travis Kelce’s lackluster performance, as he continues to show that Father Time is catching up to him. Additionally, Patrick Mahomes’s outing was certainly less than stellar, proving to be his worst Super Bowl performance to date, and showing that he still has a long way to go before he catches Tom Brady in the GOAT debate. This year’s Super Bowl was the battle that nobody wanted: the reigning back-to-back champions with a knack for squeezing out questionable wins all season, the Kansas City Chiefs, against one of the most hated teams in the league, the Philadelphia Eagles. However, many football fans were ultimately excited to see a new Super Bowl champion for the first time since 2022 as the Chiefs’ hopes at a three-peat quickly slipped from their hands.
The game started relatively slowly with the Eagles leading 7-0 at the end of the first quarter-the only score being an Infamous Jalen Hurts “tush push” touchdown. But the second quarter was where the Chiefs really started to implode. The Eagles drove down the field and kicked a 48-yard field goal to put them up 10-0. Then fan favorite Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass from Patrick Mahomes and took it back 38 yards to the endzone. After another successful extra point, the Eagles led 17-0. With his back against the wall, Patrick Mahomes stepped up and threw another interception to break out Linebacker Zach Baun inside his own red zone giving the Eagles insane field position. The pick led to an A.J. Brown 12-yard touchdown pass 2 plays later giving the Eagles an 24-0 lead going into the half. The start of the 3rd quarter was more dominant from the Eagles with another Jake Elliot field goal, and a 46-yard bomb from Hurts to Devonta Smith to put the Eagles up 34-0. The Chiefs showed some life and got onto the scoreboard with a 26-yard TD pass to Xavier Worthy. After a pair of field goals from Elliot, the Chiefs threw 2 more passing touchdowns, one to Deandre Hopkins and the other a 50-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy. But this was too little too late as the game was effectively over, and the Eagles ended up winning, 40-22.
While the game itself was over by halftime, the Eagles stellar defensive effort from this game and Jalen Hurts proving many doubters wrong with his strong performance will be remembered. The Super Bowl continues to be a yearly tradition for not just Americans but internationally too, as well as for diehard football fans and those who watch football only once a year. This year’s Super Bowl was the most viewed of all time, an impressive milestone for the NFL with the 60th Super Bowl coming next year.
