Upper School Play Review

On November 1st and 2nd, the Upper School Theater presented All Quiet on the Western Front. Originating as a 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the play follows a young German soldier through the horrors he faces during World War I.

The cast, starring William Achtmeyer ’26, Andrew Agular ’28, Boston Ezedi ’26, Jake Ma ’27, PJ Nolan ’27, Zach Park ’28, and Jai Somani ’26, embodied their roles, capturing moments of fear, madness, and profound sorrow. Their ability to use subtle expressions made the characters feel real, allowing the audience to connect with the harshness of the soldiers’ experiences. Additionally, the actors’ dramatic moments captivated the audience.

The technical elements of the production also played a major role in elevating the performance. Every background detail helped immerse the audience in the world of the Western Front. A notable prop was a decommissioned rifle from World War I, adding authenticity to the scenes. Lighting and sound effects further enhanced the play’s realism; bright flashes and loud bangs simulated the constant bombardment faced by soldiers, giving the audience a sense of the danger that defined life in the trenches. These elements worked together to highlight the horrors of warfare.

Overall, the production was a powerful interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front. The Panel congratulates the Upper School Theater for two great performances!
