Baseball Team Confident in Title Chances

The Belmont Hill baseball season is underway! As the weather has been cold and wet thus far in the spring season, the varsity team has started in a similarly lukewarm manner; they kicked off the year with two consecutive shutout victories, defeating Worcester Academy and Thayer on back-to-back days by scores of 1-0 and 3-0, respectively, but fell to Roxbury Latin, Phillips Academy Andover, and Governor’s Academy by scores of 5-3, 8-1, and 3-2 in the next week. The initial two game set was highlighted by an opposite-field shot by lefty-swinging junior and starting catcher Brendan Rocha, while Bryan Gotti has also gone deep to start the season. Following the departure of a strong senior corps headlined by Benny Wanger, Jack Wilhoite, and Charlie McConnell, the baseball team has received an infusion of youth in the 2016 season. Notable additions include Third Formers Evan Sleight, Jaylen Bailey, Jake McOsker, and Connor Hopkins, as well as a talented collection of Fourth Formers in Gotti, John Copeland, Sam Rohrer, and returning shortstop Spenser Smith. Meanwhile, the co-captains, AJ DiFillipo and Austin Masel, are confident in the team. Per Masel, the varsity baseball squad has “a strong chance at winning the title” in spite of the loss of last year’s strong senior class and a sub-.500 start, citing their new young talent and strong defense. Expectations are certainly high after a 17-4 record from a year ago; hopefully, as the weather heats up, the varsity ballclub does so as well!
