Phil Conigliaro ’18 Crowned National Champion at Beast of the East

While some students jetted off to tropical resorts or ski lodges to begin their winter break, Phil Conigliaro, along with Colin Vallis, Will Ryan, and Coach Leonardis, journeyed down to Delaware to compete in the prestigious Beast of the East wrestling tournament. Now in its 24th year, this national tournament hosts more than 800 of the best wrestlers in the country from over 100 teams, private, public, and club. Conigliaro, wrestling in a 64-man bracket, won six matches over two days to emerge with a first-place finish. This feat accomplished by Conigliaro is remarkable. Even more remarkably, Conigliaro crushed his opponents, not yielding a single point in the first four of those matches. His accomplishment is unprecedented not only for Belmont Hill, the Independent School League, and the New England Prep League, but it is also believed that he is the first wrestler from Massachusetts to have ever achieved this honor. Both Ryan and Vallis also managed to secure wins for Belmont Hill, a very impressive feat at such a competitive tournament. As defending New England and ISL champions, Belmont Hill looks forward to a potential second straight title in both leagues.
