Checking In On BH Runner Alumnus

Belmont Hill athletics have consistently pumped out elite athletes who excelled at the prep school level. Additionally, in the last decade, Belmont Hill has sent over 100 athletes to the NCAA, 22 in the past year alone.

James (Quin) McGaugh ’18 currently runs cross country and track at Middlebury College and offered a reflection on his college athletic experience so far: “From the start, the environment is like sports at Belmont Hill on steroids. The culture is similar to high school sports, as in practicing and dedication to team success, but the team is most certainly the foundation and pillars of my college life.” A highly successful runner at Belmont Hill, McGaugh was beloved by fellow coaches and teammates for his impeccable leadership and outgoing personality. Quin also cherished the camaraderie that Belmont Hill prides itself on and reflected on his current community at Middlebury: “Because we all live together, the team spends close to all hours of the day together outside of classes – and even those we try to group up to tackle the tough courses as a team. We are each other’s best friends.” Quin also mentioned that his college experience isn’t just centered around running: “Aside from running being the center of our lives and hitting some mean mileage each week over the beautiful Vermont mountains, we take trips to swimming holes and go on sunset hikes up the Middlebury Snowbowl.”

Quin’s legacy still lives on today as he holds the 800m and 1500m records at the school. With blazing times of 1:57 and 4:01 respectively, Quin left a legacy at Belmont Hill. At Middlebury, he is already thriving in the program. In due time, Quin will leave his mark in the Vermont wilderness.
