Mr. Vargas, a one-year teaching fellow with the science department, shall sadly depart from the community after this school year.
After attending Dartmouth, Mr. Vargas joined the Belmont Hill Faculty, teaching Form VI Physics and Form II Introductory Physical Science, all while helping fill in for teachers such as Mrs. Baker and Dr. Goldberg when they were absent.
In his teaching, he enjoyed testing his senior’s knowledge of static equilibrium by building the optimal popsicle stick bridge, a project in which they had a whole week to build the best bridge possible. Every senior gave it their all, and their efforts were not without fruit. Mr. The best bridge held a whopping 21 pounds of pressure while only weighing one pound.
Mr. Vargas’ favorite part about Belmont Hill was the strong sense of community, as everyone on campus actively tries to make you feel comfortable and develop great relationships with one another. “I love that there are many people you can say ‘hi’ to daily.”
He also liked the teacher-coach model because he could see his fifth soccer players in the academic arena and lead them to victories on the field (the team only lost one game). He enjoyed seeing his students and athletes take his advice, make something out of it, and improve drastically throughout the season or academic year.
After Mr. Vargas departs, he will work as a clinical research fellow at the Yale School of Medicine, specifically in their neurocritical care unit. He will be researching how to help patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (traumatic hits to their head) using technology such as MRI scanners. He will work there for two years and hopes to attend Medical School. The Panel wishes Mr. Vargas luck in his sure-to-be illustrious future!
