This season, the Varsity Sailing Team successfully defended their State Championship, winning the Carl Zimba Regatta. In a strong field of 23 Schools, Belmont Hill sailed exceptionally well, winning the A-Division and B-Division Championship, before ultimately winning the Overall State Championship.
The Carl Zimba Regatta was hosted by and held in Duxbury. In the A-Division, competing against 22 other schools across Massachusetts, Team Captains Panos Gianoukos ’26 and James Chaytors ’28 came out on top, taking home the Fleet racing A-Division Championship. Panos said, “We sailed really well. We knew that we had what it took to win, we just needed to work together. I’m really proud of our performance and I’m happy that I can say that I won back to back state championships in my time at Belmont Hill”
In the B-Division, Belmont Hill ended up having a similar result. Roger Wellington ’28 and Ilan Turevskiy ’28, came out on top in a field of 22 schools. On Thursday, May 21, the boys received the overall state championship, a remarkable feat.
Led by Coach Peter Creedon, who coaches the Varsity Alpine Skiing and Sailing teams, he got the boys prepared and after a season of long practices on the water, their hard work finally paid off. Winning a state championship is an incredible accomplishment, and doing it twice in a row is even more impressive. This team won their second state championship in a row despite only having one current senior on the team, putting them in a strong position to make a run for a three-peat next spring.
With so much young talent returning next year, expectations will be high. The underclassmen have already proven they can compete at the highest level, and the program’s culture of excellence, built through dedication and teamwork, gives the boys every reason to believe another championship is well within reach.
The Panel congratulates the Sailing team on winning a second state championship in a row.
